The National Maritime Museum comprises three sites – the Maritime Galleries, the Royal Observatory and the Queen's House – that together work to illustrate the importance of the sea, ships, time and the stars and their relationship with people.

The Museum’s collections contain more than two million items relating to seafaring, navigation, astronomy and time measurement, over 20,000 of which are available to view on the NMM’s Collections Online website. In addition the Caird Library holds some 140,000 printed works, including charts, maps and atlases, and an extensive archive.

The NMM is active in research, with focus on Imperial and Maritime Studies, the Study of Art and Travel and the History of Science and Technology. Regular events are scheduled, including seminar series, workshops, conferences, and collaborative doctoral and research projects are shared with university partners. Opportunities for external researchers include long and short-term fellowships and internships.
